Standard furniture rarely fits a Berlin period flat, a 1930s housing estate or a post-war flat: crooked walls, high ceilings and skewed floor plans are only some of the reasons. We build every piece from on-site measurements, whether that is a fitted shelf, a solid wood dining table or a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe wall, from the first sketch to installation in your flat.
When standard furniture will not fit
Mass-produced furniture comes in standard sizes, so it fits neither under a sloped ceiling nor against a period wall that leans by three centimetres. A carpenter measures on site and builds to those measurements. Then there is the construction: solid timber where you want it, rather than coated chipboard, and classic joints that still hold perfectly decades later. And you have a say in the shape and material of your own piece.

Built-In Shelving & Storage
Shelving, sideboards and fitted storage built into alcoves, under sloped ceilings and along wall lines that are not straight. A fitted piece can follow a wall that leans. A bought one leaves a wedge of dead space behind it.

Materials & Finishes
We work in oak, walnut, ash, beech and cherry and many other native species, and in some exotic species on request. For finishes we use oils and hard wax oils as well as traditional and modern lacquers. The fittings for drawers, hinges and pull-outs come from well-known, high-quality manufacturers.
Furniture making in Berlin: workshop in Treptow, fitting across the city
The workshop is in Berlin-Treptow, and we travel from there to fit across the whole city. Among other things we have built a pine fitted wardrobe in an Altbau flat in Mitte, a home-office wall unit in Lichtenberg, a chest shelf and a mirrored hall unit in Weißensee, two oak washstands in Treptow, a room divider with a walnut worktop in Steglitz, a swivelling lamp arm in Schöneberg, and a sideboard and a games table in the Hufeisensiedlung in Britz. The wheelchair-accessible kitchen table is in Lichtenrade.
Measuring always happens on site. An Altbau wall leaning by three centimetres cannot be described down a telephone, and a piece built to catalogue dimensions will not fit afterwards.

Fitted pine cupboard, built the old way
A fitted cupboard in solid pine, of the kind still found in Berlin period flats: newly made, but with cabinet fittings as they were a hundred years ago.

Dining table in Swiss pear
A classic, rustic dining and kitchen table in solid wild service tree, which the timber trade also calls Swiss pear. The top is four centimetres thick, glued up from several boards and held flat by two breadboard battens. An apron runs beneath it, and four straight legs of square section stand at the corners.
Potsdam
Hallway unit with mirror
A wall-hung hallway unit in oiled oak, with a mirror, a shelf and compartments for small items, together with coat hooks. It hangs clear of the floor, which runs through underneath.
Berlin-Weißensee
Home office with a room-height fitted wall
A room-height fitted wall with ten doors in the upper section, three drawers above a recess for an electric piano, an open shelf bay, and a sliding-door compartment under the desk. The desktop was part of the commission; the height-adjustable frame was supplied by the client. White fronts, with a continuous band of solid oak running through them.

The arm swings so the dining lamp hangs centred over the table, including when the table is extended and therefore standing somewhere else.

Wheelchair-accessible kitchen and dining table
A small table for a narrow kitchen that has to be worktop, kitchen table and dining table at once. The client uses a wheelchair. A space-saving solution was asked for: folded, the top is 45 centimetres wide at the seating sides. For meals, two very light leaves on one side fold out with one hand, and the top becomes 60 centimetres wide.

A box for small things that matter or are valuable, jewellery for example.

Games table for large board games
Large board games run long and occupy the table. This one is in oiled American cherry: panels drop in to make a second level, so the game stays set up underneath while dinner happens on top.

Chest and shelf in one
Chest and shelf in one piece, veneered in oak. It stands beside an armchair in a room that has to be several things at once: a surface to put things down, shelving, and storage for bed linen and blankets.

Both washstands hang off the wall, without feet, so the floor stays visible underneath and the room feels bigger. Two drawers each, with finger pulls milled into the front.

Common questions about furniture making
Always. Sloping ceilings, irregular floor plans and Altbau walls cannot be captured at a distance. We measure on site and build to that measurement.
Yes. The work includes a casket with inlaid initials and a swivelling lamp arm as well as room-filling wall units. The effort differs; the method does not.
Oak, walnut, ash, beech, cherry, pear and pine are all in regular use, along with other native timbers and, on request, some exotic ones. Which wood makes sense depends on the wear it will take: a worktop asks for something different from a cabinet front.
Yes, though most work stays in the city. A pear-wood dining table went to Potsdam and a modular record shelf to Cologne.
Yes, and that is the point of it. From the first sketch you decide how the piece looks, which wood it is made from and what finish it takes. Bring a precise idea and it gets built; bring none and you get suggestions.

From the measurements we produce a fixed-price quote broken down by item. We go through the details with you using hand sketches; a finished drawing is available on request as a separate service.
Workshop Production
Your piece is made in the Treptow workshop, with traditional joints and a hand-finished surface.
Delivery & Installation
Delivery on the agreed date and installation in your home. We take the offcuts away with us.
