Chest and shelf in one piece, veneered in oak. It stands beside an armchair in a room that has to be several things at once: a surface to put things down, shelving, and storage for bed linen and blankets.

What was asked for was the combination rather than either piece on its own, and a minimal outline: the lid as one unbroken surface, with open shelving above it.
