Bespoke Shelving

Most rooms are not square. A bought shelving unit rarely sits where the space actually is, and leaves a gap above or at the sides. We measure on site, draw from that, and build into the opening that is actually there. Shelf spacing follows what goes on it: books, records, files.

How we build it

On the chest-and-shelf piece from Weißensee, the chest and shelf form one piece: the lid is one unbroken surface, with open shelving above it. A wooden hook holds the flap in place. The shelves sit on drilled pin rows in the carcass sides and can be adjusted. On the record shelving, the modules line up and carry on around a corner: compartments at the top to flip through, shelves below for the rest of the collection. Shelves are sized for their span and load so they do not sag.

Materials and finishes

On the chest-and-shelf piece from Weißensee, the carcass is oak veneer, oiled. Other shelving we build in black plywood case board, its edges sanded and oiled so the plies read pale against the black faces, as on the record shelving. Bare pine if you want to paint it yourself. Other timbers on request.
